Networking: Tips and advice

Focus on what you can contribute with

Be prepared to take the initiative in the conversation. What are your career and school plans and what contributions can you offer the company? Note the difference between the passive "What does your company do?"-approach and telling a company representative "Here's what I do and know".

Prepare small success stories

While most often asked in job interview settings, it pays to have thought about a few situations where you identified a problem and how you successfully solved it.

Who are the companies?

Learn a little about the companies, and their products and values beforehand. You'll find more information in our company profiles.

Bring an up-to-date CV/resume

Bring a handful copies in case someone wants a copy. Book an appointment with CBS Career Center if you need help reworking your CV/resume.

On the day of the event, we'll also be answering questions at our CBS Career Center stand.

Remember the name

Try to remember the name of a person, both before and after you meet with them.

Take notes

When you collect business cards, make a small note on the back. Eg. what was distinctive about the person, what did you talk about, etc. It makes a good impression when you remember what you spoke about if you met again.

Smile and ask questions

Always approach people/companies with a smile, eye contact and a firm handshake. Ask questions – by being interested, you become more interesting yourself.

Dress to match

Match the attire of the companies you intend to visit. A suit and tie is nice, but not always necessary.

Don't be too eager

Meet people a couple of times before you try to add them to LinkedIn, Plaxo or Facebook.
